Question

Assalamualeikum. I know that the Hanafi position on Qurbani is that every nisaab member of the family must offer their own sacrifice. Could you give me the daleel for this? Other members of my family have quoted hadiths indicating that one qurbani by the head of the family is enough for the whole family.

Answer

Wa alaikumus salaam. It is mentioned in a hadith : من وجد سعة فلم يذبح فلا يقربن مصلانا “He who has the capacity, and does not sacrifice, may not approach our Musalla (place of prayer - on the Eid)”. In the light of this hadith the Hanafiyyah has ruled that it is waajib for every individual who possess the nisaab. Normally in those days it was only the responsible of the family who had the mean to do it. So the hadith mentioned by you applies in that context. Otherwise the aforementioned hadith is clear to what Hanafiyyah says. It should be clear by this explanation, our intention is only to prove the authenticity of our practice. Not to blame or criticize other mazhab.
