Perfuming the house with "lobane" (incense) and "agarbathi" (sandal) on Thursday evenings to repel the demon
Q. Is it permissible to perfume the house with "lobane" (incense) and "agarbathi" (sandal) on Thursday evenings to repel the demon (Shaitaan)?
A. The fact that cleanliness holds a very important place in the lives of Muslims is no secret to anyone. Nabi-é-Karîm (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) then says in a hadith of Tirmîzî:
"Allah Ta'aala is pure and He loves purity."
Further on in the same hadeeth he (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) says:
"Clean your yard."
If Nabi-e-Karim (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) has ordered us to clean our yard, we can also understand how important it is to keep our house clean. Is it not true that to apply perfume is one of the particularities of cleanliness? No doubt, it is recommended to perfume the house in Islaam.
In another hadith of Tirmîzî, Rasuloullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) said:
"There are four things that are among the principles of the Prophets (Alaihimus Salaam): Hayaa (modesty), perfume, Miswaak and Nikaah."
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) himself was very fond of perfume and according to a hadith of Tirmîzî, Hazrat Anas (Radiyallahu anhou) said:
"Rasuloullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) did not refuse perfume."
And according to Muslim and Tirmizi, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) advised his Ummah not to refuse perfume because it came to us from Jannah.
Moreover, in a haditth of Nasaî, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) said:
"Love for women and perfume have been made beloved to me and the coolness of my eyes is in Salaah."
On the other hand, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) prevented his Ummah from going to the mosque with a bad smell (eg. from eating raw garlic, ginger or onion). In a hadith of Bukharî and Muslim, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) said:
"He who has consumed garlic, onion and leek should not approach our Masjid because angels also are inconvenienced by those things that inconvenience men."
It is for this reason that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) recommended his Ummah to take a bath and to apply perfume before going to the mosque on the day of Jum'ah.
Since 'lobane' and 'Agarbathi' are two types of perfumes, they can be used both at home and in the mosque, without confining the practice to Mondays or Thursdays only. This is because it is not specified by the Shari'ah just like how igniting loban or agarbathi for the purpose of repelling Shaitan (demon) has nothing to do with Islaam. This is a misconception and this kind of superstition is totally foreign to Islaam. Certainly Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) ordered his Ummah to perfume the Masjid on the day of Jum'ah as mentioned in a hadith of Ibn Ma'adjah. And definitely the Sahaabah (Radiyallahu anhoum) executed this order, but it should not be forgotten that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) also said:
"When Azaan is given, Shaitan runs away, releasing gas and immediately returns after the Azaan. And he flees again when Iqaamah begins and finally returns as soon as the Iqaamah ends. And there, he tries to put all sorts of thoughts in the heart of the Musali (the one who is performing the Salaah) so that he will forget the number of Rak'aat he has performed."
This hadith clearly shows us that Shaitan continues to come to the mosque despite the fact that it was perfumed. So all this means is that lobane and the agarbathi have nothing to do with the repelling of Shaitan.
Now, it is up to us to think whether lobane and agarbathi are able to repel the demon or not? How was it that Shaitaan constantly returned to the mosque after the Azaan or Iqaamah was given as mentioned by Rasulullah (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam)? It is very important to repel Shaitan whether at home or at the Mosque because of the importance of Salaah. But Nabi-e-Karim (Sallallaahu A'laihi Wasallam) did not teach his Ummah to light up loban or agarbathi with the intention of repelling Shaitan.
In short, it is advisable to light up lobane or agarbathi in order to perfume the house or the mosque. However, lighting them with the intention of repelling the Shaitan is Bid'ah, an action which is highly reprehensible in Islaam and must absolutely be avoided.
