Delivering the Khutbah of Jummah while sitting?
According to a Hadith of Saheeh Muslim, Hazrat Ka'b Bin Ujrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) entered the Masjid while Abdur Rahmaan Bin Ummul Hakam was delivering the Khutbah (Jummah) in the sitting posture. Upon this, Hazrat Ka'b Bin Ujrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) said, "Look at this bad person! He is delivering the Khutbah in the sitting posture. And yet Allah Ta’ala said:"When they see trade or futility, they hurry to it and leave you standing." (S62:V11)
Explanation:
Once, Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) was delivering the Khutbah of Jummah when a caravan of traders from Shaam (the name of a place) entered Madinah. Some of those who were listening to the Khutbah stood up and went to these traders. And here, Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) continued his Khutbah in the presence of twelve people only. Thus, Allah Ta’ala revealed this Ayah to prevent them from repeating the same.
The verse in which Allah Ta’ala disapproved their action, also shows that Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) was delivering the Khutbah in the standing posture. Therefore, Hazrat Ka'b Bin Ujrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) used this Ayah to disapprove of the way that Abdur Rahmaan Bin Ummul Hakam was delivering the Khutbah. That is, to deliver the Khutbah in the sitting posture is contrary to the practice of Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam).
Observation:
If instead of standing, an Imam sits down to deliver the Khutbah, then, technically speaking, there is no big difference. This is particularly when the Imam is sitting on the Mimbar where everyone can see him and can hear the Khutbah that he is delivering. But despite this, Hazrat Ka'b Bin Ujrah (Radiyallahu Anhu) criticised this Imam very severely because he went against the lifetime practice of Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). Can this reasoning, not be applied regarding delivering the Khutbah in Creole? There is no convincing reason to say that this cannot be applied here. Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) delivered the Khutbah in Arabic during his whole life. To deliver the Khutbah in Creole is against the lifetime practice of Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). Thus, according to this reasoning, making the Khutbah in Creole deserves to be disapproved severely.
For the Ulama, delivering Khutbah in another language besides Arabic is a practice that goes against the permanent practice of Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) and the Sahaabah-e-Kiraam (Radiyallahu Anhum). Thus, due to that, it is a very undesirable practice according to them.
