Zakaat on silver or gold jewels

Question:

Should I give Zakaat on the silver or gold jewels that I use?

Reply:

In principle, one must give Zakaat on all objects of gold or silver if they reach Nisab separately or together with other objects on which Zakaat is obligatory. In this regards, there is no difference between ingot or jewels that are being used or not. There is an authentic Hadith which is found in Sunan Abu Daawud according to which a woman came with her daughter who had two big gold bracelets in her hands. Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked her if she gives Zakaat on them. The woman replied in the negative. On this, Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked her if she would be pleased that on the day of Qiyaamah Allah Ta'ala makes her wear two bracelets of fire. Thus, on hearing this, the woman removed these bracelets and handed them over to Nabi (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam). There are two other authentic Hadith in Sunan Abu Daawud itself which are reported by Hazrat Umme Salamah (Radiyallahu Anha) and Hazrat 'Aisha (Radiyallahu Anha), which proves the same thing.
