THE FEMALE VOICE

Should the Female Voice Be Considered "Aurah"?

There is a divergence of opinion among the scholars of Islam regarding whether the female voice should be considered "Aurah"—i.e., a voice that should only be heard by mahaarim (those whom one is not permitted to marry).

Imam Shafi'i (Rahimahullah) holds the view that a woman's voice is not "Aurah." On the other hand, 'Allaamah Ibn Humaam (Rahimahullah) holds the contrary opinion. This is why the Azaan and Iqaamah recited by a woman are considered Makruh (discouraged) according to some scholars.

In light of the Ahaadith, it is clear that the Ummahat-ul-Mumineen (the mothers of the believers—wives of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu 'Alaihi Wasallam)) did speak to non-mahaarim men. However, this communication was done behind a screen, preserving a level of modesty.
